A lathe is a machining tool that is used primarily for shaping metal or wood. It works by rotating the workpiece around a stationary cutting tool. The main use is to remove unwanted parts of the material, leaving behind a nicely shaped workpiece.

For design the spindle of a vertical lathe, you need to know 3 variables:

1) The diameter range that you need to turn (maximum diameter and minimum diameter);

2) The material with the poor machinability index;

3) What type of material tool do you want to use.

This variables are necessary to estimate the power of the spindle and the minimum - maximum rpm speed range.
